Managing Stress

Here are two ways for managing stress in your life. The key, as always, is to actually do them. Thes two are simple, easy, and effective. Start with one and

Deep Abdominal Breathing
This breathing resets your respiratory system. You are probably breathing shallow and high in your chest. This is not healthy and creates more stress in your body.

Sit in a comfortable chair, close your eyes, and try not to be distracted by anything. Begin slow, rhythmic breathing. Now change your breathing rate as follows:

Inhale for a count of 2.
Hold your breath for a count of 4.
Exhale for a count of 1.

Do this for a few minutes and notice a literal change in your body.

Music
Listening to music has helped calm stressed people for a long time. In fact, symphony conductors tend have one of the longest life spans and its thought to be the music. Saxophone players have the shortest in the band. I'm not sure about statistics for rock, western, pop, or rap performers.

Music activates the right brain or creative side of the nervous system. Music has been proven to increase memory and test scores among test takers.

Typically, it is classical music that is associated with calming stress levels. But choose a piece of music and listen to the music. Try instrumental and try vocals.

Listen with intent. Notice how you feel afterwards.
