Side Effects of Stress
In reality, there can many side effects of stress. There
are two major effects of stress we'll look at here. The good helpful stress. The
bad destructive stress.
But understand, even the good effects of stress can turn destructive.
Eustress
Eustress is a good type of stress. It is the type of stress you experience
before you have the need to exert physical force. Eustress prepares the muscles,
heart, and mind for the strength needed for whatever is about to occur.
Eustress also allows for creativity. When a person needs to have some extra
energy or creativity, eustress kicks in to bring them the inspiration they need.
Athletes will experience the strength that comes form eustress right before they
play a big game or enter a big competition. This is a positive adrenal response,
as long as the body can rest and readjust.
When the body enters the fight or flight response, it will experience eustress.
The eustress prepares the body to fight with or flee from an imposing danger.
This type of stress will cause the blood to pump to the major muscle groups, and
will increase the heart rate and blood pressure to increase. If the event or
danger passes, the body will eventually return to its normal state.
Distress
Distress is a negative type of stress. This type of stress causes the mind and
body to undergo changes when the normal routine is constantly adjusted and
altered. The mind is not comfortable with this routine, and craves the
familiarity of a common routine. Distress is damaging because the body cannot
return to normal functioning.
Hormones produced by the adrenal glands run rampant through the body trying to
keep it defending against stress. In the course, the body literally wears out.
